House training
While
the puppy is still in its nest, the mother will keep
it clean, but as soon as it is able to stand on its
little legs, it will, stagger and fall, but answer
nature’s call outside its nest. Puppies never foul
their own nest. Thus, it is up to the owner to get
the dog to see the whole house as a ‘nest’.
If you observe your puppy closely, you will see that
it has fixed times to piddle and poop. Usually this
is directly after it wakes up or after dinner or
after playing. By taking the pup outside on these
moments, it will soon learn what to do.
Do not punish the pup if it fouls in the house. Just
like with little children, rewarding them works a
hundred times better than punishing them. By
punishing the pup, one will much sooner achieve the
opposite effect and it will often take longer before
the pup is housetrained. (When punishing often, the
puppy may even become afraid of you).
At night it is best to put the puppy in a box or
crate. As I said, it will not foul its own nest. But
remember: puppies can not hold it for over 5 or 6
hours. This means: take it out at night and early in
the morning. Fortunately a dachshund is clever and
if you are consistent with it, most of them will be
housetrained within 2 to 3 weeks
note: we try to make our pups 'house trained' on newspapers before they moved to their new homes.
